Alam Khan is an internationally acclaimed sarod virtuoso, composer, producer, and educator, widely recognized as one of the foremost torchbearers of the prestigious Maihar Seni Gharana. As the son and foremost disciple of the legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Alam carries forward a musical lineage that traces its roots back over four centuries. Through his exceptional artistry, he continues to preserve the rich traditions of Hindustani classical music while presenting them to contemporary audiences around the world.
Alam began his formal training at the age of seven under the direct guidance of his father, mastering the 25-stringed sarod—one of India's most expressive and technically demanding classical instruments. His performances are deeply rooted in the traditional raga system, where the soulful voice of the sarod is beautifully complemented by the rhythmic brilliance of the tabla and the meditative drone of the tanpura, creating an immersive and spiritually uplifting musical experience.
Between 1996 and 2006, Alam toured extensively alongside Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, performing at renowned concert halls and international music festivals across the globe. These performances established him as one of the leading representatives of the next generation of Indian classical musicians, admired for his expressive improvisation, technical mastery, and profound understanding of the Maihar tradition.
While deeply committed to preserving the purity of Hindustani classical music, Alam Khan is equally celebrated for his innovative collaborations with artists from diverse musical traditions. His work seamlessly blends the sarod with instruments such as the sitar, string quartet (violin, viola, and cello), the Afghan rubab, and the Middle Eastern oud, creating powerful cross-cultural musical experiences. These collaborations have enabled him to bridge Indian classical music with world music, jazz, chamber music, ambient compositions, and contemporary orchestral works, introducing the timeless sound of the sarod to audiences far beyond traditional concert settings.
Following the passing of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan in 2009, Alam became the Head of Indian Classical Instrumental Studies at the renowned Ali Akbar College of Music (AACM) in California. He also serves on the faculty of the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, mentoring aspiring musicians while preserving one of India's greatest musical traditions for future generations.
Alam Khan has performed with many of India's finest classical musicians and has appeared at prestigious international festivals, cultural institutions, universities, and concert halls worldwide. His artistic contributions have earned widespread recognition, including praise from Rolling Stone India, which acknowledged him as one of the leading artists carrying forward the extraordinary legacy of the sarod established by his father, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
